I'm trying something different this year - growing sunflowers. They are a native crop to Kansas (state flower) and are use by local Delange seed for bagged birdfeed. They bring diversity and deep roots.
I also turned the pastured pigs out into a pen that is growing their feed - milo, cowpeas, sunflowers, corn. They are loving it. Pigs on pasture get a variety of nutrients and express their pigness by digging and knocking down forage to eat. No combine needed.
I planted some open pollinated corn very late (July 5) into a heavy cover crop. I have yellow, blue, and red corn. I call the yellow corn Murphy Boy corn because my son Owen has worked to save ears for planting for 3 years now. The corn is adapting to our soils through seed saving. I'm hoping to try making corn meal at some point!
